The craft beer movement in America continues to grow with countless towns from coast to coast supporting one or more breweries within their city limits. Here on Colorado’s Front Range, Fort Collins currently boasts 21 breweries and counting with more in the pipeline this year! Sorry, I didn’t mean to boast or brag. I can literally walk out the front door of my home and find myself walking into three breweries offering a dizzying array of brew styles and formats.
One of my favorites is Funkwerks. This saison and sours-focused brewery just won a coveted gold medal award at the 2018 World Beer Cup for it’s Oud Bruin in the Belgian-style Flanders oud bruin or oud red ale. I haven’t tried that one but many of their saisons offer a refreshing change from the glut of hopped up IPAs and Ales around town. Check out their description of one of their flagship beers, Tropic King / 8.0 % ABV:
"Originally designed to be a hoppier version of our flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced the hop leaving us this very unique Imperial Saison. Notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, ginger and pepper. Pairs well with hula hooping."
If you’re ever in Fort Collins, do yourself a favor and make your way to Funkwerks.
